Match Report - Coggeshall Town Reserves v Reserve Team

Published by Shane Exley on February 21, 2012 09:47

Back in action after the mid winter snow break, the Ressies made the short journey to Coggeshall. Back in the squad were Ricky Shields and Stuart Bragg, and also included was youngster Joel Shurvinton. However, bad news a couple of hours before kick off when keeper Pudney reported he had been unable to shake of a bad back he woke with that morning. Vince donning the gloves once again.

Early exchanges were even, but Colne gradually took advantage of the elements, and with the wind on their backs began to peg Coggeshall back. They took the lead when a Mansfield free kick from midfield flashed through a crowd of players and ended up in the bottom corner. But it didn’t last long. Hesitancy from Taylor led to a corner. Vince punched to the edge of the area, but the ball was returned and headed home from close range. About 5 minutes later, another long range free kick from Mansfield, found its way into the goal. A carbon copy of the first. Colne were now playing some neat football. Stalley jinked into the penalty area and was clipped by a defender. The ref pointed to the spot. Mansfield stepped forward, but usual taker M.Huwes had already placed the ball, and easily sent the keeper the wrong way. Minutes later Stalley feed M.Huwes, who lifted the ball over the keeper into the top corner, only for it to be disallowed for an infringement earlier in the attack. During another attack Shields was pushed but this time to ref gave nothing. As the half came to a close, Colne conceded a free kick on the edge of the area. Once again slack marking resulted on Coggeshall scoring a soft goal.

Half Time 2 - 3

The 2nd half was always going to be difficult, with the wind now in the Ressies faces. The Coggeshall no 9 was lively, hanging forward, trying to move back onside at the very last moment. As Coggeshall broke down their left, J.Huwes missed the chance to intercept, the Colne defence was out numbered and an equaliser resulted. The home side were now well on top. Colne introduced Sheriff and Bragg in an attempt to chance things, but the only thing that changed was the weather. The wind got up and the Strong rain lashed down. During this time Coggeshall took the lead. First Colne failed to close down on the edge of the area, and although the shot was mishit, it somehow bobbled agonisingly into the bottom corner. Minutes later it was five, again given too much space and time the home forward fired high and over Vince into the net. As the rain began to ease, Colne crawled their way back into the game. Bragg was seeing plenty of the ball in midfield and using the pace of Sheriff to good effect. Coggeshall were reduced to 10, when the centre half was shown a second yellow. With five minutes remaining Colne broke down the right, the cross eventually found M.Huwes who finished neatly. A little too late.
