The Ressies entertained Hatfield Peverel in their last fixture of the season. A must win game for Colne. And although Peverel had already been relegated, they fielded a very strong and experienced side.
Right from the first whistle you could tell that Colne would have to work hard to achieve the necessary result against a well organised side. The pitch was in excellent condition despite having been played on the previous day. Both team taking advantage of the zippy surface and passing the ball neatly. Colne won the first corner of the game. Huwes whipped in a wicked left footer which was headed away for another corner. The same happened again, but third time of asking, it was Vince who timed his jump to climb highest, he met the ball perfectly, and thundered his header home off the under side of the crossbar. The visitors gradually came back into the game. An unchallenged shot from the edge of the box crept just wide and then Pudney was called upon to push over a shot for the angle. Bragg was the subject of some close attention but he didn’t let it bother his game. As the first half drew to a close, Peveral won a corner, Pudney came out to claim the cross, but under challenge failed to catch the ball cleanly and it was bundled home for the equaliser.
Half Time 1 - 1
Colne, as usual, started the second half slowly, sitting too far back allowing Peveral time and space to pass the ball. It wasn’t long before they took the lead. The home defence were caught on their 18 yard line and the Hatfield midfielder was able to pick his spot from 25 yards. Injuries to Vince and Bragg allowed Taylor and Robinson to enter the contest, with Mead dropping back to centre half. Robinson was immediately in the action down Colne’s right. Josh Huwes then replaced Granshaw, allowing Mansfield to push forward. And it was from a foul on him that Colne got back on level terms. The keeper failed to gather M Hewes’ low shot and Mead was on hand to toe poke the ball over the line. Within minutes Colne took the lead for the second time. This time it was Robinson who found himself on the end of the cross to coolly slot home. Peveral pushed forward looking for an equaliser, twice Pudney had to tip over goal bound efforts. As the light faded, the final whistle was greeted with a cheer for the home side. A win and with it premier division survival.
